I LOVE that he had his boyfriend right by his side. He didn't need to wait until the out games to do his thing. How many closeted competitors do you think there are in the Olympics, and does Matthew's story touch them in anyway?

Openly Gay Diver Matthew Mitcham

Any Athlete in the spot light and out of the closet is a hero of mine. CONGRATULATIONS Matthew on being a wonderful Athlete and for NOT BEING A COWARD.

Should he win, Mitcham will join the very small club of openly gay Olympic gold medalists.

But as significant as that moment would be for gay athletes everywhere, Mitcham has only one goal in mind. “I just want to be known as the Australian diver who did really well at the Olympics,” he says. “It’s everybody else who thinks it’s special when homosexuality and elite sport go together.”
